About this concert

In his piano work Carnival, Robert Schumann not only performs figures like Pierrot and Harlequin, but also fellow composers like Schubert, Chopin and Paganini. Maurice Ravel translates the rich colour palette of this imaginative piano work to the orchestra. German composer Hans Zender also took up Schumann's work. His famous Fantasie opus 17 is the starting point for Zender's Schumann-Fantasie, in which he fuses the 19th and 20th centuries in a grand orchestral work. György Ligeti's Mysteries of the Macabre is an absurdist homage to his own career, full of pitch-black humour and exuberant cynicism, with a starring role for Flemish soprano Katrien Baerts. A unique experience and a feast for the ears and eyes.
